Dear Parents
Welcome to this week’s newsletter, as we head into Half Term after a packed start to the year.
Since I last wrote, Year 11 have returned from their Computer Science trip to Berlin, and we wish safe travels to those students and staff heading off to Greece, Berlin and New York on school trips during Half Term. We hope these are wonderful experiences and are very grateful to the staff for their time organising such memorable outings for our students.
On Tuesday 10 October, I was privileged to attend the Independent School of the Year Awards in Central London, where JAGS had been nominated for Independent Girls’ School of the Year. Although we didn’t come away with the trophy this year, I was very proud to be representing JAGS as a finalist in this prestigious awards category.
Open Morning on Saturday 7 October was a huge success, with record numbers of visitors. The school site was abuzz, and our students showed great enthusiasm as department reps and tour guides. We have now finished our series of Open Mornings for September 2024 entry, and begin our Welcome Mornings, where we meet our prospective new students throughout the second half of term.
The Houses have been hard at work, with numerous episodes of Interhouse Sport, alongside the Clarke House charity day. The staff Masked Dancer show was tremendous fun, although I will make sure I rehearse for slightly longer in advance of the next edition! The real experts were the students, who filled the VWA last week with an impromptu Just Dance session; I could definitely learn a few tips from them. Evensong was an altogether more serene affair, and it was a joy to hear the combined choirs of JAGS and Dulwich College filling the Chapel.
We also spent time on Monday in assembly reflecting with our Chaplain, Rev Liz Gray, on the developing situation in the Middle East, and our thoughts are with all those affected at this very difficult time.
We say farewell to our much-loved Rev Liz at Half Term as she moves on to be closer to her family. Although her time with us has been short, we have treasured her kindness, wisdom and open spirituality which has so enriched our community.

Local Travel
A reminder for all parents that when we return from Half Term on Monday 6 November 2023, the Green Dale School Street will be implemented by Southwark Council. This traffic management order is part of the Southwark School Streets Programme, the aim of which is to improve both the safety and the air quality in streets with a high volume of active travel. The order means parents entering Green Dale between 08:00 and 09:00, or from 15:15 to 17:00 will face a penalty charge from Southwark Council. There are no restrictions on exiting Green Dale.
As ever, and in line with our sustainability aims, please can we take this opportunity to remind everyone using cars to travel to school to be mindful and considerate of their manoeuvres around the school location. Please also note that Great Spilmans, opposite the Senior School, is a private road for residents and may not be used for the school drop-off or pick-up. We appreciate this new School Street may cause disruption to the travel routines of some parents, but are grateful for your support of these new arrangements.

Key Stage 3 Update
It seems that we have had four seasons in one week here at JAGS. Students went from short sleeves to full rain coats and scarves in the space of seven days. Spirits remain high and KS3 students have been making the most of the last of the good weather by eating outside and spending time on the ‘Teletubby Hills’ during lunchtime.
On Tuesday afternoon, I spent the most fantastic hour on the balcony of the sports hall cheering and celebrating a superb victory for our formidable Year 9 netballers. What an incredible team!
Year 7 have been immersed in the spooky world of Darkwood and it has been such a pleasure to witness their enthusiasm and energy during their group performances.

Key Stage 4 Update
As we approach the end of the first Half Term, it is fabulous to be able to look back on all that has taken place and all that has been achieved. I am so proud of all of our KS4 students and the drive and enthusiasm they have displayed this year. They have worked incredibly hard, so please do encourage them to have a much-needed rest during the two-week break.
The last three weeks have been as busy as ever: Year 10 have enjoyed talks about mobile phones and Maths puzzles, while our Year 11 Computer Science cohort enjoyed a fantastic trip to Berlin. Thanks to all staff involved for making that trip a reality. The return of Just Dance was well received and a wonderful opportunity to let off steam.

Sixth Form Update
As Shirley Bassey once sang“. .. it’s all just a little bit of history repeating…”, and this week we saw House Captains yet again persuading teachers to take leave of their senses and perform in the Masked Dancer for Breast Cancer Now. Congratulations to Mary, Bethan and Emma for organising a hugely enjoyable and slick Clarke House event.
Year 13s have been very busy with UCAS form completion and 53 ‘early application’ forms (for Medicine related courses and Oxbridge) have been completed and sent to UCAS. The focus now is very much on all the equally important remaining forms.

Tommy Foster,
Director of Music
What was your last role prior to JAGS?
I was Deputy Director of Music, Head of Instrumental Studies and a Deputy DSL at Eton College for the last nine years. Prior to that I had roles at St Mary’s Ascot and Ampleforth College. Before I was a teacher I was a freelance orchestral musician. I still do bits of professional playing when time allows.
What attracted you to work at JAGS?
JAGS has a unique musical history having had both Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst as predecessors. It also has a very strong link to the musical community in South London. I applied for a Visiting Music Teacher role here some 20 years ago and was unsuccessful – it was time to set the record straight!

I would like to think that I was a fairly hard-working student for at least some of my subjects. I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do and took Maths, Physics, English Literature and Music as A Levels. I started at University studying Electrical Engineering and after a year changed to do Music. My parents weren’t initially thrilled at the idea.
What do you want to achieve in your time here?
To try to put it succinctly; I want to ensure that we are providing the most appropriately challenging music education experience for everyone in the school.
Music needs to be accessible to everyone, and I would encourage every new Year 7 student to consider learning an instrument – it’s not too late!

School House Sustainability Champions
We were delighted to be crowned as Sustainability Champion at the School House Awards 2023.
Judges commended our “creative and comprehensive approach” and stated: “Leaders have chosen to take this seriously by employing a dedicated Sustainability Lead to focus on five pillars but their efforts go way beyond this. So much goes on behind the scenes of course. The magic lies in how this is seeping into the students’ education on a daily basis.”

TfL Gold Star
JAG has earned Gold accreditation from Transport for London as part of its Travel for Life scheme.
The combined efforts and dedication from the Junior and Senior schools to transform our travel habits, engage the wider community in best practices and reduce the journeys made by car have all contributed to the certification.
We wish to thank all of our students and parents for taking onboard our commitment to sustainability and contributing to this Gold Award.

Clarke Charity Day
The VWA was standing room only as Clarke kicked off the first House Charity Day of the year with a spectacular Masked Dancer show.
Students were left pondering the big questions: Which teacher is behind the mask? And how on earth did Clarke House convince them to do this?
There was an incredible atmosphere throughout the whole day and even a successful bake sale at Rec, with all money raised going on to support Breast Cancer Now.

Year 11 Berlin trip
“Over the weekend, Year 11 Computer Science students travelled to Berlin to improve our understanding of the subject. I enjoyed visiting the Brandenburg Gate and learning about the history behind it. A particular highlight of the trip was walking around the Festival of Lights, during which we got to see the Brandenburg Gate illuminated by magical artwork. Each day we had a photography competition which added to the fun. My favourite part of the trip was our visit to the Computerspielemuseum (Computer Games Museum) where we learnt about the first computer games and the mechanisms behind them. We then had time to play on some of the arcade games there. I had a really great time exploring Berlin; seeing the city, architecture, and culture.”

Just Dance
Our lunchtime Just Dance sessions proved one of the runaway successes of last year’s Wellbeing & Mental Health Awareness Week.
And so, after much demand from students Just Dance returned to JAGS for a special session in the VWA.
We can’t wait to do it all again after the Half Term break!

Traditional Russian Clay Toy Workshop
Year 8 students studying Russian enjoyed an exhibition of handmade clay toys, sculptures and whistles from regions which included Filimonovo, Abashevo, Hludnevo and Kargopol. The exhibition demonstrated the diversity of this peasant craft, its uniqueness and expressiveness.
Following a short lecture from author Oksana Sekatcheva on the history and meanings behind the toys, students impressed staff with their own creations.
Japanese trip to London
Year 10 students studying GCSE Japanese travelled into the city for their Discover Japan in London Day.
They visited Japanese-related places across the capital such as the Japan Centre, a traditional Japanese confectionary shop and Artbox Gallery. The students even found time to enjoy an authentic Japanese lunch!

Saracens Work Experience 2023
“Over the summer, one other JAGS student and I had the pleasure of attending Saracens Work Experience 2023. During the week at The StoneX Stadium, their North London home, we were kept busy in back-to-back board room meetings with the managers of the Saracens Rugby. It was such a fantastic experience to have an input in their future strategy.
“We were tasked with coming up with ideas to improve some of their current strategies, before pitching them to the directors of each department. Despite not being a rugby fan (to begin with), the whole culture within Saracens was incredible and having experienced their values of honesty, discipline, work rate and humility; I was so pleasantly surprised to find that there is so much more to the sport than the actual game.”

“Mrs Allan’s Sixth Form notices always provide us with numerous opportunities. I recently took advantage of this by applying to a two-year intern course at Clifford Chance – a Magic Circle law firm.
“Clifford Chance proudly boasts an award-winning social mobility development programme for Year 12 students. It includes 12 different components over two years which all play a part in improving and developing each intern’s future and aiding their personal development. While I’m not applying for a law degree at this stage, I am keen on taking the postgraduate law conversion course.
“The 12 components include; launch, development, mentors, experience, tutoring, action, board, coaching, university prep, and network.”

“The ACCESS launch in July was an amazing way to start the summer holidays. It was an opportunity to meet the rest of the cohort and learn about what the next two years had in store for us. We were also very lucky to tour the building, (my favourite part was the café if I am completely honest). But in all seriousness, I was taken aback by the facilities and the surprises continued as we had our virtual work experience in the following week as part of ACCESS development. This was a chance to develop our skills and knowledge as aspiring lawyers and learn more about Clifford Chance.
“We had seminars with ACCESS alumnae who had training contracts or were current trainee lawyers. There was also the opportunity to learn more about different teams at Clifford Chance, along advice on applications and CVs. Our session on Intellectual Property (IP) law was by far my favourite and had never heard of what IP lawyers do and it really sparked a newfound interest. So far, the internship is promising and I have made so many new friends; I can’t wait for the rest of the programme.”

“Our working lunch with Dr Rema was very informative. We discussed the variety of different higher education pathways available after Sixth Form, including apprenticeships. We reflected on the apprenticeship fair that was recently held at the Charter School North, where different speakers and exhibitors came together to spread awareness about apprenticeships and their value. We discussed the benefits of apprenticeships, which included learning while gaining experience and being able to make money while earning a qualification. Mrs Allan told us how she particularly enjoyed hearing from a JAGS alumna who is on a Level 7 apprenticeship (equivalent to a Master’s degree) and now mentors University students. Each member of the committee shared their academic goals and interests with Dr Rema, varying from Engineering to Linguistics. We talked about pursuing our interests internationally, and also the advantages of doing a year abroad. Overall, we greatly benefitted from the discussion, and we are very grateful to Dr Rema for her visit. ”

Sustainable Book Stands
The Library Team has collaborated with our Design and Technology Department to transform hardback covers from outdated stock into a new generation of recycled books stands. The next step will be to enlarge the template and create stands which showcase the library’s larger books.

Black History Month
In the library this October, we have been celebrating Black History Month with the help of Library Assistant Mrs Barnett and the folklore stories of Anansi.
Anansi (meaning ‘spider’ in the Twi dialect of the Akan language of Ghana) is a very smart but mischievous god whose stories often involve a moral lesson about the consequences of making bad choices, traditionally told by elders to pass down knowledge to the younger generations.
Sometimes the stories were acted out by the storyteller, or even sung with dancing and drumming. In the 1950s, people began collecting the famous stories and writing them down so that school children could learn them (notably in Ghana where the stories originated).

SSLP Apprenticeship Fair
“The Apprenticeship Fair was a very useful experience for me. Beforehand I was undecided on whether an apprenticeship may be something worth applying to, however after the fair I was convinced, by the helpful people at the different companies, that it is definitely something I will be looking into. In addition to this, having a panel of apprentices speaking to us was helpful, as they were speaking from real life experiences and I could gauge more of a feeling of what being an apprentice would be like in future.”

Skills for Students
This Half Term we have been introducing students to a set of key skills we would like them to focus on as they move through the school. Skills are abilities like teamwork and communication. They describe the ability to do something successfully or efficiently. Other important skills such as numeracy, literacy and digital literacy are not included within the list of key skills because they are the main focus of academic subjects, so will be developed in lessons. We have been explaining to students that by the time they are ready to leave school, universities, colleges and future employers will expect them to have developed a range of skills and have a good understanding of where their strengths lie.

Unifrog
Unifrog is a website launched in 2013, initially to help Sixth Form students choose which universities to apply to, hence the name. Since then it has expanded enormously and now includes resources for students to help them explore their interests, reflect on their skills, and record activities for future reference. We signed up to Unifrog about 18 months ago and have been using it with Years 11, 12 and 13. We are now rolling out Unifrog to all Senior School students. As students move through school there will be many opportunities to develop their skills both in and out of the classroom. Using Unifrog to record activities and skills will help them to gain a deeper understanding of their skills so that they can plan what to do next to develop them further.
There is a particular focus on key skills within the Key Stage 3 Curriculum Plus Programme and teachers are starting to award skills stickers in lessons to reward students for demonstrating key skills.

JAGS Alumnae
Five Year Class Reunion
The JAGS Alumnae Association were delighted to welcome back so many familiar faces for the Five Year Class Reunion.
Over 70 alumnae from the Classes of 2017 and 2018 returned to The Crown & Greyhound in Dulwich Village to catch up with school friends and share details of their journeys so far with their proud teachers.
We look forward to seeing them again in the not too distant future as we continue to expand the raft of alumnae events.
Sport
This Half Term, students have competed cross Badminton, Cross Country and Hockey as part of the Interhouse Sport competition. The competition across the year groups was fierce and so closely contested that we finish the first round of Interhouse Sport with a joint first place finish:
1st – Clarke and Desenfans (2540 pts)
2nd – Holst (2480 pts)
3rd Bettany (2349 pts)
Next Half Term the sports will move on to Netball, Table Tennis and Swimming.

Football
Our Year 8 and 9 Football teams played in competitive fixtures against The American School in London. The Year 8 team were convincing winners on the day, while the Year 9s succumbed to a narrow 5-4 defeat after an enthralling match.

Netball
Our Netball teams continued their excellent cup form with big wins in the Surrey Preliminary Tournament for our U18s and U14s. The U16 and U15 teams also performed incredibly well throughout the tournaments.

Hockey
The Hockey teams have also continued their good start to the season with the U15 team progressing to the third round of the ISHC. The prospect of a long trip to Bristol awaits us in the next round.

Cross Country
Congratulations to our U13, U15 and U18 ESAA Cross Country Cup teams who all successfully qualified from the first round of the cup held at Eltham College last week.
All three teams now progress to the regional finals, which will be held on Saturday 11th November in St Alban’s.

Congratulation to Kimberley (Year 8) who has recently been crowned Under 14 British K2 Champion in both individual and team events.
Speaking of her success, Kimberley said: “I started my Taekwondo journey about two years ago. After many hours of training, last weekend, I competed at the National Poomsae Championships at Worcester Arena. I am now the K2 under 14 British National Champion in individual and team. I am also in the South England Regional Squad.”

All three teams now progress to the regional finals, which will be held on Saturday 11th November in St Alban’s.
Congratulation to Kimberley (Year 8) who has recently been crowned Under 14 British K2 Champion in both individual and team events.
Speaking of her success, Kimberley said: “I started my Taekwondo journey about two years ago. After many hours of training, last weekend, I competed at the National Poomsae Championships at Worcester Arena. I am now the K2 under 14 British National Champion in individual and team. I am also in the South England Regional Squad.”
